Dr. Punam Krishan: From the Clinic to the Dance Floor—A Life in Motion
In the glitzy, high-energy world of Strictly Come Dancing, few participants have balanced the demands of the show with the rigors of a full-time career quite like Dr Punam Krishan. A practicing NHS GP, media personality, and advocate for culturally informed healthcare, Dr Punam has made a name for herself by blending her professional expertise with her personal passions. In this candid conversation, she opens about juggling motherhood, medicine, and the spotlight, all while staying true to her authentic self.
The Strictly Experience: Living a Dream
For Dr Punam, the transition from consulting rooms to the ballroom was nothing short of transformative.
“I found the process of Strictly—mentally, physically, and emotionally—really challenging but incredible at the same time,” she shares. “People see the glitz, the glam, and the costumes, but behind the scenes, there’s an intense process to make that magic come to life. Juggling a full-time GP job, motherhood, and training was exhausting but also the fulfilment of a long-held dream.”
Acknowledging the hurdles, Dr Punam believes in embracing the challenges that come with pursuing dreams. “Sometimes, you’ve got to put in the hours and the work. Dreams aren’t always easy to attain, but that’s what makes achieving them so extraordinary.”
Breaking Stereotypes in Medicine and Media
As a doctor stepping into the public eye, Dr Punam faced her share of scepticism.
“Doctors are often put on pedestals, expected to behave a certain way, but it’s important for people to see us as human,” she explains. “Strictly allowed me to show a different side of myself—as an ordinary working mum with dreams beyond my profession.”
Navigating the intersection of medicine and media, she’s used her platform to challenge misconceptions and connect with her community in new ways. “The rise in health misinformation online is alarming. I knew I had to step out of my comfort zone to combat it. My goal has always been to serve patients and inform the public with authenticity and purpose.”
Culturally Informed Healthcare
Dr Punam Indian heritage plays a pivotal role in her approach to medicine and advocacy. Growing up in a family steeped in Ayurvedic traditions, she appreciates the balance between holistic and evidence-based practices.
“My grandfather was a renowned Ayurvedic doctor, so I grew up with alternative medicine as a way of life,” she shares. “While I advocate for science-based treatments, the integration of holistic approaches helps me care for patients in a well-rounded way.”
She is also a staunch advocate for addressing the healthcare disparities faced by ethnic minority communities. “Diseases don’t discriminate, but access to care often does. Healthcare professionals must approach every patient with respect, compassion, and an understanding of cultural nuances.”
Mental Health: Tackling the Stigma
Mental health remains a sensitive topic in many South Asian families, but Dr Punam believes that change begins with conversation.
“In our communities, there’s often no space for mental health discussions. Education and awareness are key to normalizing these conversations,” she says. “If you’re struggling, it’s okay to reach out. Talk to your family, friends, or a doctor. Together, we can break the stigma.”
Balancing Tradition and Modernity
As a mother, Dr Punam is mindful of striking a balance between traditional values and the evolving aspirations of younger generations.
“In South Asian families, there’s often pressure to follow a certain path,” she acknowledges. “But we need to celebrate diversity in career choices and support young people in discovering their unique strengths. It’s about respecting their individuality while offering guidance.”
Wellness Practices: A Holistic Approach
Amid her busy schedule, Dr Punam prioritises her own well-being through mindful practices.
“Every morning, I start with affirmations, journaling, and meditation,” she reveals. “I love going on long walks with my dog to clear my mind and reflect. Balance is key—while I cook nutritious meals for my family, I also enjoy a slice of cake or a glass of wine. It’s about moderation.”
Social Media: A Double-Edged Sword
As an active presence on social media, Dr Punam is acutely aware of the platform’s potential—and its pitfalls.
“Health misinformation on social media is a serious issue,” she warns. “I wish platforms would ban non-experts from giving health advice. But when used responsibly, social media can be a powerful tool for raising awareness and dispelling myths.”
Advice for Aspiring Doctors and Public Figures
To young people, especially those from South Asian backgrounds, who aspire to blend medicine with a public role, Dr Punam offers this wisdom:
“The sky is your limit. There’s room for everyone. Stay true to yourself, lead with purpose, and always strive to help others. Authenticity and resilience will guide you in achieving your goals.”
Dr Punam journey is a testament to the power of determination, authenticity, and the courage to step outside one’s comfort zone. From her consulting room to the Strictly stage, she continues to inspire with her dedication to healthcare, family, and personal growth—all while staying grounded in her mission to serve.
