The Tradition at the Heart of the Circle

For those who grew up with Garba, the connection often comes before any explanation: a familiar song starts, the clapping falls into rhythm and the steps come back. But the circle itself carries meaning. Originating in Gujarat, Garba is traditionally performed around a central lamp, known as a garbo, or an image of the Goddess. The light represents her presence, while the circle reflects the cycle of life, creation and the divine energy that sustains it.

Garba’s rhythmic footwork and hand movements are distinct from Dandiya Raas, where dancers work in pairs, striking decorated wooden sticks to the music. Both bring people together, whether the soundtrack is Gujarati folk songs, devotional music or contemporary remixes, performed by live singers and traditional musicians or mixed by DJs. In 2023, Garba of Gujarat was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, recognising a tradition that preserves cultural identity, strengthens community bonds and passes from one generation to the next.

London’s Gujarati community, along with its temples, cultural associations and community organisations, has helped make these celebrations an annual fixture. Some evenings remain closely centred on worship, with Aarti, the devotional offering of light, forming part of the gathering. Others put more emphasis on performance and social celebration. Together, they offer different ways to connect with a festival that honours strength, wisdom, protection and compassion.

See You on the Dance Floor

Of course, there’s the pleasure of getting ready too: colourful chaniya cholis, embroidery and mirror work, traditional kediyu outfits, and the familiar discussion about what everyone is wearing. Then you arrive, spot people you haven’t seen since last year and find yourself catching up between rounds while the children learn the steps beside you.

That’s what keeps people coming back. The devotion matters, the traditions matter, and so does the joy of sharing them. Across London this October, halls and temples will fill with the sound of the dhol, the click of Dandiya sticks and circles of dancers making room for one more.

Save your dates, send the guide to your friends and get your Dandiya sticks ready. “Just one more round” has a way of becoming the rest of the evening.

Happy Navratri
