Still Got It: Sanjay Kapoor Has Us Smiling (and Blushing)

What happens when your teenage crush walks into a London townhouse looking better than ever? You swoon, you giggle, and then you interview him for Luxurist. Sanjay Kapoor joins us for an exclusive cover shoot — sharing stories, laughs, and that iconic smile we’ve never quite recovered from.

By Anisha Vasani and Zamiha Desai for Luxurist Magazine

You know those moments in life when you pause and think, Is this actually happening? That was us, standing in the stunning party venue that is 145 Knightsbridge, London, about to interview the one and only Sanjay Kapoor — childhood crush, Bollywood legend, and all-round icon. And just to make things extra surreal? He walked in looking like a walking Louis Vuitton ad, smiled at us like he hadn’t just aged at all, and said, “Let’s do this.”

From the moment he arrived on set, it was clear: Sanjay still has it. Effortlessly charming, genuinely warm, and with skin so good it could have its own agency deal, he instantly lit up the room. The entire glam squad melted a little. And let’s be honest — so did we.

The shoot itself was a dream. Sanjay looked sharp in Gopal Kanda’s sleek new menswear line, styled to perfection and groomed by the brilliant team at First Barber. He nailed every shot — one take, cool breeze, flash of that million-dollar grin — and then casually asked, “We done?” Icon behaviour.

“I remember having the biggest crush on you when Raja came out,” Anisha admitted within the first three minutes of our chat.
“Only then?” he teased. “Not now?”
(We blushed. We died. Then we brought ourselves back to life so we could keep going.)

Despite being part of the first family of Bollywood — yes, his brothers are Boney and Anil Kapoor — Sanjay’s energy is surprisingly low-key. No entourage tantrums, no diva vibes. Just a genuinely nice guy who’s managed to stay grounded through decades in the public eye.

“What’s success?” he asked. “It’s doing something you love, and still doing it 30 years later. That’s a blessing.”

He spoke about his start in the industry — how Prem took years to complete, and how by the time it hit cinemas, he’d already wrapped five other films.

“I was technically a newcomer when Prem released,” he said. “But I’d already shot Raja, Chhupa Rustam, Beqabu… I just kept going.”

And while the film industry has changed massively since the ’90s, Sanjay’s attitude hasn’t. He’s still here, still booked and busy, and still deeply in love with acting.

“I never felt like quitting. Even during the tough times. I love acting too much.”

One of the turning points in his more recent career? Netflix’s Lust Stories, which came about thanks to a spontaneous gym session.

“Dibakar Banerjee saw me working out and said, ‘That’s my Salman.’ If I’d skipped the gym that day, who knows?”

Sometimes the universe just shows up for you in sweatpants.

These days, he’s riding a new wave thanks to OTT platforms.

“There are so many great roles now,” he said. “On Netflix, Amazon, Hotstar… it’s all about content. You don’t have to be the ‘main lead’ anymore to make an impact.”

He’s recently completed three films: Param Sundari with his niece Janhvi and Sidharth Malhotra, Raat Akeli Hai 2 alongside Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte, and Palatwar, where he plays a Marathi cop for the first time.

“I love being in front of the camera. I did production when I had to,” he admitted. “I had to feed my kids! But now I’m back to acting full time — and loving it.”

We couldn’t not ask about Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives, where Sanjay made multiple appearances and instantly won a whole new generation of fans (and memes).

“I did 40 films, and they’re all talking about Bollywood Wives,” he laughed. “I walk around London and people are asking about Maheep!”

Don’t worry, Sanjay. We’re here for both.

He spoke lovingly about his children, especially Shanaya, whose debut film Aankhon Ki Gustakhiyan is out this summer.

“She’s so dedicated. During lockdown, she was doing belly dance classes over Zoom — all on her own. That’s passion. I never had to push her.”

His son Jahaan is training too, and recently acted in a small-budget English film shot in London.

“I wanted him to experience real work. No vanity vans, no fuss. Just the work. That’s how we all started.”

And when we asked who’s inspired him the most, he didn’t hesitate.

“Madhuri Dixit. We’ve done multiple films together, and she’s always been so grounded. When I was new, she never made me feel small. That kind of grace stays with you.”

Between takes, Sanjay was full of stories. About shooting in Ooty in the early ’90s, changing behind trees (vanity vans weren’t a thing then), and the joy of finding good food in every city. He’s a self-confessed foodie who swears by balance: eat the carbs, then walk them off in Hyde Park.

When asked what keeps him grounded, he didn’t reach for a soundbite. He just shrugged and smiled.

“We grew up in a two-bedroom flat. We never took ourselves too seriously. I still don’t.”

We wrapped things up with a cheeky quick-fire round:

Guilty pleasure? Netflix.
Favourite prankster in the Kapoor clan? Arjun. No debate.
Most surprising thing about you? “My age.” (And no, we’re not telling.)
Secret career dream? “Pilot. But now? I can’t imagine being anywhere but in front of the camera.”

By the end, it honestly felt like chatting with an old friend. A ridiculously good-looking, well-dressed, impossibly humble friend who’s starred in iconic films and still acts like it’s day one.

He might not shout about his legacy, but we will: Sanjay Kapoor is a reminder that staying power, style, and sincerity never go out of fashion.

Also, we’re still recovering from that smile. Someone check on us.
