By Haps Dhand, Drinks Specialist and Cocktail Curator
As a drinks specialist who has spent years hosting events and running a boutique bottle shop, I’ve witnessed an exciting shift in the cocktail landscape, especially over the past summer: tequila is no longer just a fleeting trend but a full-blown movement. Once relegated to shots and party nights, tequila has evolved, emerging as a premium spirit of choice for refined palates, with cocktails like the Paloma and Picante leading the charge.
Premium tequila brands such as Don Julio and Casamigos are now staples in high-end bars, sought after not just for their smoothness but for their ability to elevate the cocktail experience. These tequilas, known for their heritage and craftsmanship, offer a depth of flavour that transforms a simple drink into a luxurious indulgence.
What’s particularly fascinating is how tequila has resonated with diverse communities, especially among Asian drinkers, where we’ve seen an incredible rise in demand for tequila-based cocktails at events. The pairing of these cocktails with Indian cuisine, for instance, creates a harmony of bold, vibrant flavours. The smoky, earthy notes of mezcal, a cousin to tequila, have also gained popularity, offering a robust counterpoint to spicy dishes and rich, aromatic flavours often found in Asian cuisine.
Tequila and Agave Masterclass: Day of the Dead Special
To celebrate the rise of tequila and its deep cultural roots, I’ll be hosting a special tequila and agave masterclass at our cocktail bar, Beverage Boutique, on 1st November, marking Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). This immersive session will delve into the rich history and production methods of tequila and mezcal, and attendees will have the chance to sample premium tequilas like Don Julio 1942, Casamigos, and other fine agave spirits.
Spotlight on Ojo de Dios Mezcal Hibiscus Edition
A particular highlight of our masterclass will be a feature on Ojo de Dios Mezcal, with a special focus on their Hibiscus variation. This mezcal offers a unique floral twist on the traditional smoky mezcal profile, balancing the rich earthiness with bright, aromatic notes of hibiscus. Its distinctive flavour profile makes it perfect for pairing with bold flavours like Mexican cuisine.
Masterclass Afterparty: Margaritas, Tacos, and Mariachi
Following the masterclass, we’ll be hosting a vibrant party to continue the Día de los Muertos celebrations. Expect live music from a traditional mariachi band, flowing margaritas, and delicious tacos. It’s set to be a fantastic night of tequila, food, and entertainment. Tickets are available now at beverageboutique.co.uk.
