Veronica Mehta: Three Decades of Soul, Sound, and South Asian Power

The singer-songwriter talks collaborations, classical influences, and the freedom of running her own label

For over 30 years, Veronica Mehta has carved out a legacy that bridges cultures, genres, and generations. A true pioneer in the British Asian music scene, Veronica rose to prominence in the early 2000s as part of a groundbreaking wave of talent that redefined the sound of UK R&B and Asian fusion. With a voice that’s as smooth as silk and as powerful as her presence, she quickly became a standout—working alongside heavyweights like Rishi Rich, Jay Sean and Juggy D, create anthems that still echo through clubs and airwaves today.

Her debut singles became instant classics, and as part of the Rishi Rich Project’s extended circle, she helped usher in a new era of global recognition for British Asian artists. But Veronica didn’t stop at being a featured voice—she evolved into a solo artist in her own right, known for her emotive storytelling, genre-blending versatility, and an unwavering commitment to authenticity. From performing on international stages to advocating for women’s voices in music, Veronica’s journey is one of passion, perseverance, and pure artistry.

That perseverance was tested in the most personal way when Veronica was diagnosed with breast cancer—a life-altering moment that shook her world but never stole her spirit. With courage, grace, and unrelenting strength, she faced the battle head-on and emerged not just as a survivor, but as a warrior. Through her recovery, music became both her sanctuary and her sword. Channeling her pain, hope, and healing into her art, she began a new chapter—one defined not just by success, but by purpose. Her voice, already powerful, now carries an even deeper resonance: one of survival, rebirth, and unstoppable love for the music that saved her.

Veronica Mehta on “Piya”, Collaboration, and Creative Freedom

“It’s a great feeling to know I’ve been part of the history of South Asian music.”

British-Indian artist Veronica Mehta has long been known for blending R&B, pop, and South Asian sounds — and she’s still finding new ways to evolve. With her latest release “Piya”, she returns with a sound that feels both rooted and refreshed, created alongside DJ Swami and classical vocalist Rafaqat Ali Khan

Bringing “Piya” to Life
The collaboration came together naturally. “I’ve always been a fan of DJ Swami and Rafaqat Ali Khan,” Veronica says. “I had the idea for a romantic ballad, and thankfully they were both up for it. We created this Hindi love song that feels really special.”
The track brings together modern soul, Indian classical influences, and subtle instrumentation — including the Ravan Hatha, a traditional string instrument that dates back to 2500 BCE.
“This was a more mature sound for me,” she explains. “We brought in classical elements and fused them with something contemporary and soulful. It opened up a new creative space for me.”

A Story in the Song
Veronica wrote and composed “Piya” herself, drawing on the emotional tension that comes with unspoken feelings.
“I imagined two friends — they’re close, spending time together — and she’s quietly struggling with the fact that she feels something more,” she shares. “She’s not sure whether to say anything, because it might change the friendship.”
DJ Swami shaped the production, bringing his signature East-meets-West sound, while Rafaqat Ali Khan’s vocals elevate the emotional intensity. “He really takes it to another level,” she says. “It adds a deeper layer to the track.”

Creative Independence
“Piya” also marks a milestone for Veronica: it’s one of her third major releases under Viz Pop Records, the label she launched to take full control of her music.
“Having my own label gives me creative freedom — there are no limits,” she says. “I can work with whoever I want and explore different genres.”
That freedom is especially meaningful after her experience with breast cancer, which has shaped how she approaches her work.

“Going through something like that shifts your perspective,” she says. “I’m not afraid to bring more honesty and depth into my writing now.”

Learning Through Collaboration
Over the years, Veronica has worked with everyone from Rishi Rich and Jay Sean to emerging and classical artists alike. What stands out most about collaboration, she says, is how unpredictable and inspiring it can be.
“Every artist brings something unique,” she says. “You don’t always know where a song might go — and that’s the exciting part.”

Looking Ahead
With more music on the way, Veronica is focused on exploring new sounds, supporting other artists through her label, and finding balance.
“There are more records coming, more collaborations. But I’m also making time for family and my health,” she says. “I’m enjoying the process and letting things grow organically.”
