Mani Kohli: Fashion designer of Mani Kohli
My earliest memories of my mother, Mani Kohli, introducing me to the world of fashion and design go way back to when I was around 8 years old. She made me a custom Billie Jean outfit because of my obsession with Michael Jackson. I was practically a mini MJ impersonator! Later, around 13, I began observing her more closely in her production house as she worked on her designs and interacted with clients at her boutique. That was when I got my first real glimpse into the fashion world through her eyes.
My mother’s approach to design was always open and fluid, with inspiration drawn from moods, places, and memories that reflected her upbringing in an army household. Her creative freedom rubbed off on me, and I was encouraged to explore different hobbies from a young age. By 17, I had choreographed one of her fashion shows at Café Royal, which inspired me to pursue fashion more seriously and study it.
Having a mentor at home has been both a blessing and a challenge. My mother recognised my individuality, particularly in menswear, and encouraged me to trust my instincts. She taught me to stay humble and to value relationships above all else—something I carry forward in my own business.
What most people don’t know is that before entering fashion, my mum was a certified beautician in the 70s, which was rare for a South Asian woman at the time. She also deeply believes in giving back and often mentors young women who lack access to education or vocational training. Her resilience, kindness, and commitment to serving others are qualities I truly admire.
