Anila Dhami – ITV News & 5 News Presenter & Journalist
Mum: Richa Dhami – Qualified Beauty Therapist and Owner of a Mobile Beauty Company in Essex.
My mum has always been my biggest supporter, especially when I chose to pursue a career in journalism. She trusted me and encouraged me to chase opportunities that weren’t available to her when she was growing up. Despite working as a market trader to support our family, she always wanted better for us and believed in my ability to succeed. Her motivation, belief, and encouragement have been vital in my journey.
Mum’s perspective has also shaped my passion for societal issues. She is kind, generous, and always willing to help others. From carrying out charity work to hosting community events, her kindness and commitment to equality have influenced my own work. I’ve seen her treat everyone equally, and she’s instilled that same value in me.
I’ve always known how strong and inspiring my mum is, but recently, I realised one of her most admirable qualities: she remains true to herself no matter the situation or people she’s around. This authenticity has been a valuable lesson, especially as I deliver confidence workshops to others, helping them find their true voice.
My mum has also helped me build the confidence and resilience required for my career. She constantly affirms me and encourages me to pursue even the most ambitious goals. In our family, we celebrate each other’s achievements, and her ‘you can do it’ attitude has been a big confidence booster for me.
Growing up, mum gave me the freedom to explore my passions. She trusted me to pursue a career in journalism, even when I had no contacts or clear path. She and dad supported me by driving me to work experience placements and trusting me to interview young people across London, which eventually led to opportunities like interviewing MPs in Parliament. Her belief in me has shaped my career and continues to push me forward.
